REVIEWS | NINTENDO 3DS
Eighth generation | 2011-2020 | Cartridge, digital
Games: 1,807 | Units sold: 75.94m
An evolution of the dual screen, stylus-controlled formula that proved such a hit with the DS, the 3DS added an analogue slider, whilst widening the top screen and adding a stereoscopic 3D effect. Despite easily outpacing its direct competition in the form of the PlayStation Vita, the 3DS range would sell fewer than half as many units as the DS, as the rapid growth of the smartphone market dramatically slashed sales of dedicated portable gaming devices. The battery-draining 3D effect was abandoned for the one-piece 2DS redesign, but retained for 2012’s 3DS XL revision, which offered significantly larger screens. Backwards compatibility with DS software ensured a formidable library of around 5,000 compatible games, whilst dedicated Mario, Zelda and Animal Crossing entries helped continue Nintendo’s software successes.
