REVIEWS | ATARI JAGUAR & CD

Fifth generation | 1993-1996 | Cartridge & CD-ROM
Games: 50+11 | Units sold: < 150,000
Following consecutive 8-bit consoles in the 2600, 5200 and 7800, Atari went out in a blaze of glory with the Jaguar, which claimed to leapfrog the incoming 32-bit generation with its 64-bit powe. The system was beset with issues relating to hardware, whilst Atari struggled to capitalise on early demand, with the system enjoying only limited third-party support. Alien vs Predator was its standout exclusive, whilst Rayman and Iron Soldier also debuted on the system. A CD-ROM add-on arrived in 1995, but it would support just 11 games. A number of underwhelming first-party reboots and unimpressive 3D games ensured the system’s rapid demise. With Atari in dire financial circumstances, the system was discontinued in 1996.
