REVIEWS | NINTENDO DS
Seventh generation | 2004-2013 | Cartridge, digital
Games: 3,468 | Units sold: 154.02m
The DS (dual screen) marked a return to Nintendo’s philosophy of innovation, as the DS would become the highest-selling dedicated handheld system ever made. Using a stylus with the bottom screen in conjunction with traditional d-pad and buttons, the DS offers easily the most expansive selection of games to feature on any portable, with the likes of the Professor Layton, Phoenix Wright and Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training ushering in a more cerebral era for portable gaming. Outselling the PSP nearly 2-to-1 worldwide, the platform would see a number of revisions, starting with the DS lite (improved battery life) in 2006. The DSi followed in 2008, removing GBA cartridge backwards compatibility but granting access to the DSi Shop, adding storage capabilities and two cameras. The DS’s distinctive control philosophy would carry over to its successor, the 3DS, in 2011.
