REVIEWS | PLAYSTATION PORTABLE ; PSP

Seventh generation | 2004-2014 | UMD, digital
Games: 1,924 | Sales: 82m

The most successful non-Nintendo handheld by sales, the PlayStation Portable helped modernised the portable market with a home-console-on-the-go ethos, sporting comparable experiences to those produced by the PS2. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories was a mammoth success, but it was Monster Hunter Freedom 3 that was arguably most influential in extending the system’s life, selling nearly 5m units in Japan and playing a big role in the 20m+ sales the PSP would enjoy in its native country. As a consequence, support remained particularly strong from developers in the region. Innovative titles LocoRoco and Patapon were well-received. Though battery life posed problems, the ability to charge as you play proved a breakthrough. Sony hedged its bets with the poorly-received, digital-only PSP Go in 2009, as well as the more affordable PSP Street, which would reinstate UMD compatibility, but remove the online store.
