Following years of success in PC gaming, Microsoft produced their first console to compete with the PS2, Dreamcast and GameCube. Whilst it would capture only a modest market share worldwide, the Xbox performed notably in North America. The first console to feature a built-in hard drive, the Xbox’s strong performance specs, alongside the beginnings of the Halo and Forza Motorsport series, helped lay the groundwork for future online successes. Its progress was checked by a comparatively late arrival to the market and complaints concerning the sizeable "Duke" controller.
