REVIEWS | GAME BOY & COLOR
Fourth & Fifth generations | 1989-unknown & 1998-2003 | Cartridge
Games: 1,043 & 915 | Units sold: 118.69m (combined)
The progenitor of the portable gaming experience, Nintendo’s Game Boy built on their Game & Watch standalones with its iconic, green dot-matrix screen and ubiquitous “brick” design that would become synonymous with handheld gaming. The Game Boy’s excellent library was able to see off more powerful colour competitors, limiting the Game Gear and the Lynx to a fraction of the market. The more-compact Game Boy Pocket arrived in 1996, followed in 1998 by the Game Boy Light which sported a backlit screen, a feature that would surprisingly not be included in a Game Boy product again until 2005. The GB’s Color successor represented a small step technologically, but backwards compatibility and the huge popularity of the Pokemon games helped it crush the WonderSwan Color and Neo Geo Pocket Color commercially.
