REVIEWS | GAME BOY ADVANCE
Sixth generation | 2001-2009 | Cartridge
Games: 1,538 | Units sold: 81.51m
Positioned as retro alternative to the sixth-generation home consoles, the Game Boy Advance struck a chord with gamers, despite issues with the original hardware’s lack of a backlight. Exhibiting similar power and architecture to the SNES, several GBA games, including popular launch title Mario Kart: Super Circuit, exhibited a close equivilent to Mode 7 for its 3D effect. Backwards compatibility with Game Boy and GBC carts resulted in more than 3,000 compatible games. 2003’s SP clamshell redesign fixed the backlight issue, whilst the ultra-compact GBA Micro released in 2005.
