The early 2000s saw PC gaming struggling to keep pace, with staple genres declining in popularity and FPS market dominance being challenged by console versions of Halo and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Whilst physical sales fell sharply during the period, PC gaming would enjoy a renaissance thanks to online storefronts, beginning with Steam in 2003. This was followed by GOG Galaxy, which aimed to preserve older games and help them run on modern hardware. With Epic Games following with their own store in 2018, PC stores helped make tens of thousands of games available to players. These, coupled with a homogenising of hardware across PC and consoles, helped make computer gaming more accessible and more affordable.
