REVIEWS | PLAYSTATION 5

Ninth generation | 2020- | Blu-ray; digital
Games: 833 (as of Jan. 2025) | Sales: 65m+ (as of Jan. 2025)

An evolution rather than a revolution, the PS5 enjoyed success out the gate, partially helped by a renewed focus on home entertainment brought about by isolation periods during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, issues with touts buying up consoles hampered the building of an early player base. As a consequence, console exclusives were slow to emerge, resulting in many gamers opting to stick with their PlayStation 4 systems well into the 2020s. However, haptic triggers and improved rumble feedback led to PlayStation’s (and perhaps gaming’s) most advanced controller in the DualSense, whilst God of War: Ragnarok, Horizon: Forbidden West and platformer throwback Astro Bot led the line in terms of first-party software.
