REVIEWS | SNK NEO GEO & CD
Fourth generation | 1990-1997 & 1994-1997 | Cartridge & CD-ROM
Games: 118 & 98 | Units sold: 1.18m & 570,000
The Neo Geo Advanced Entertainment System was a 16-bit luxury console devised as a rental device allowing gamers to play carts of SNK’s MVS arcade games with a 6-button joystick. When it was released at retail, the AES was the most expensive console ever, with the most expensive games. A CD equivalent came with a more conventional controller and cheaper games, though was criticised for its lengthy loading times. Despite the Neo Geo being discontinued in 1997, SNK continued to support it with new games until 2004. Its 118 games represent, pound-for-pound, one of gaming’s most consistently strong libraries.
