REVIEWS | COMMODORE AMIGA & CD32
Fourth & fifth generations | 1985-1996 & 1993-1994 | floppy disk & CD
Games: 2,235 & 147 | Units sold: 4.8m & 125,000
Succeeding the Commodore 64, Amiga’s 16-bit home computers were amongst the most graphically powerful of their time. Models included the 500, 500+, 600 and 1200 with enhanced processing power and expandable RAM allowing Amiga to keep pace with its early nineties console competitors. Supporting mouse & keyboard, joysticks and Mega Drive control pads, the Amiga’s enormous library of games included a raft of classics: The Secret of Monkey Island, Lemmings, Speedball 2, The Chaos Engine and Worms. However, as gaming became more advanced, the inhibitive capacity of floppy disks led to Commodore releasing the Amiga CD32 console in 1993, only for it to be discontinued a few months later. Despite Commodore folding in 1994, Amiga magazines and a lively demoscene helped keep the platform alive into the early 21st Century. The fully-3D Heretic II would release in May 2000, ensuring the computer had software releases spanning fifteen years.
