The Wii revolutionised gaming through its introduction of motion controls, and marked a spectacular revival in the commercial fortunes of Nintendo’s home consoles. Wiimote’s allowed players to control characters through gestures, with the likes of Mario Kart Wii and Wii Sports proving massively successful party games. Wii Fit added a new dimension – and new demographics – to the gaming pool, whilst Super Mario Galaxy is considered a classic. The system was also backwards compatible with GameCube games. Despite foregoing the HD visuals of the rivalling PS3 and Xbox 360 systems, the Wii proved that creative hardware could be embraced by the wider public, though Nintendo would move in a different direction with the Wii U.
