REVIEWS | PLAYSTATION 2
Sixth generation | 2000-2013 | DVD; CD-ROM
Games: 4,378 | Sales: 160m
The most successful games console in history, the PS2 built handsomely on the successes of its predecessor by retaining its distinctive DualShock controllers and broad-church support of Western and Japanese development: no other system has produced as many distinct physical game releases. As well as offering playback for DVD films and audio CDs, the PS2 supported games on both formats and was also backwards compatible with more than 4,000 original PlayStation titles. A slim PS2 came out in 2004 and proved a huge hit: astonishingly, over the first five years of the following generation, the PS2 would sell more than either the Xbox 360 or the PS3, over the same period of time. Highlights included God of War, Persona 4 and Shadow of the Colossus, whilst Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas would shift more than 17m copies.
