REVIEWS | MEGA-CD; SEGA CD
Fourth generation | 1991-1996 | CD-ROM
Games: 207 | Units sold: 2.24m
A 16-bit CD add-on for the Mega Drive, the Mega-CD (SEGA CD in North America) was released in response to NEC’s PC Engine CD, which had proven popular in Japan. The system boasted an increase in memory and the ability to play audio CDs, video sequences and spoken dialogue, which resulted in brief surge in interactive movie games. Despite modest sales, the add-on received a little over 200 releases worldwide, including acclaimed titles Sonic CD, Lunar: The Silver Star, and Snatcher.
