REVIEWS | PLAYSTATION 3

Seventh generation | 2006-2017 | Blu-ray; digital
Games: 2,562 | Sales: 87m

Representing the first mini-crisis for the PlayStation brand, the PS3 had a rocky start following an unconvincing E3 reveal, tepid launch line-up and unpopular Sixaxis controller revision, which removed the vibration function. Add to this the comparative technological inferiority of third-party releases next to the Xbox 360’s output and the huge popularity of the unconventional Wii, and Sony faced a challenge in regaining support. A return of the DualShock helped, as did a significant focus on big-budget first-party exclusives, including Uncharted, Killzone, Resistance and The Last of Us. Additionally, a focus on create-and-share titles helped broaden the player base, alongside enduring support from Japanese developers. The first PlayStation to feature an online store, the PS3 would see a slim model release in 2009 and a super-slim in 2011, as well as the PS Move motion controller in 2010, which partially or fully supported more than 130 games.
