Java and J2ME games sought to capatilise on the emerging popularity of mobile devices around the turn of the millennium. Whilst technologically crude next to competing dedicated gaming devices, Java spawned a number of popular puzzlers, adventures and lifestyle games. Classic puzzle game Bejeweled began life as a Java app, as did racing series Asphalt. Doom and BioShock enjoyed notable reimagenings, whilst The Elder Scrolls and Resident Evil each enjoyed a number of Java-exclusive releases. It would be superceded by Android devices and touchscreen mobile games after around a decade.
