REVIEWS | PLAYSTATION VITA

Eighth generation | 2011-2019 | Flash memory card, digital
Games: 1,732 | Sales: approx. 15m

The Vita would fix several complaints lingering from the PSP, replacing the controller nub with two analogue sticks, adding trophy support, and placing a stronger emphasis on the system’s online capabilities. The Vita came with front and rear cameras, a front touchscreen and a rear touchpad, light sensitivity and a giro. However, the console would falter after a strong launch line-up, coming to rely heavily on three excellent Danganronpa games and cross-platform purchases between Vita and PlayStation 4 indie games. With a significant chunk of the seventh generation’s portable market transitioning to Android devices, the Vita’s market share collapsed. Despite an impressive games library amid lower than expected sales, Sony pulled out of the handheld market with its discontinuation in 2019.
