REVIEWS | BANDAI WONDERSWAN & COLOR

Sixth generation | 1999-2003 & 2000-2003 | Cartridge
Games: 109 & 91 | Units sold: 1.55m & 1.1m (3.5m total, including SwanCrystal)

The brainchild of Game Boy creator Gunpei Yokoi, the legendary designer sadly would not live to see the release of the WonderSwan. A 16-bit processor made it the most convincing challenger to the Game Boy Color in the portable market of the late nineties, and though the WonderSwan would not release outside of Japan, it did gain some traction in its homeland. A 2000 Color version added to the system’s respectable library of games, and would ultimately support exactly 200 titles. In 2002, a revision of the Color model, SwanCrystal, released with an improved screen and lower price-point in an attempt to keep pace with Nintendo’s new Game Boy Advance, but the system in all its forms would be discontinued the following year.
