REVIEWS | MASTER SYSTEM
Third generation | 1985-1996 | Cartridge
Games: 316 | Units sold: 10-13m
SEGA’s 8-bit Master System (Initially Mark III in Japan) proved an emergent success. Whilst its sales fell significantly short of the NES, a strong, diverse catalogue of games helped establish SEGA as a competitor, whilst the appearance of the handheld Game Gear helped extend its lifespan with games targeted to feature on both systems. Alex Kidd proved a big hit, and the console continues to thrive in Brazil, where TecToy’s plug ‘n’ play variants continue to sell, more than 30 years on.
