REVIEWS | SUPER NINTENDO; SNES

Fourth generation | 1990-2003 | Cartridge
Games: 1,738 | Units sold: 49.1m

The Super Nintendo (SNES, or Super Famicom) produced a powerful alternative to the Mega Drive and PC Engine in the 16-bit console wars. Whilst it would sell a little less than the NES on account of SEGA’s improved market share, the SNES sported one of the most impressive all-round libraries ever in gaming. It’s joypad added two more face buttons and two shoulder buttons, and is arguably the definitive pre analogue era controller. The system utilised Mode 7 to produce a 3D effect that was used in a host of racing games, as well as Star Fox, Final Fantasy VI and Pilotwings.
