Fifth generation | 1994-2006 | CD-ROM
Games: 4,105 | Sales: 102.4m
With teething issues at SEGA and Nintendo resulting in a protracted end to the 16-bit era, the PlayStation provided a crossroads experience that melded some of the strongest sprite-led games with the advent of 3D innovative. The system was first to offer dual analogue controls, whilst long-running series’ Tekken, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon and Gran Turismo all debuted with the PlayStation. Despite limited RAM resulting in protracted loading times, the affordability of CD-ROMs (and the system itself) meant it became the go-to development platform of its era. Net Yaroze provided a lively homebrew scene, with games featuring on demo discs. The first home console to pass 100m sales, a smaller revision, named PSone, released in 2000.
